How I've Written This Email (for 4 years), A Quote About Our Bodies, and Beans + Bread

I've had a few of you ask me to share how I write this email. I've been writing this email every Sunday since December 2019. This month marks four years!

My method is very simple. I write the email in a Google doc first so that I can search for anything. The Google doc is 304 pages long at this point. Throughout the week I save things on Instagram or in Pocket. On Saturday or Sunday, I also read though newsletters that I subscribe to and will include a link from there if it's worth sharing.

When it comes to this introductory opener, I write whatever's been on my mind. I will share deeper, more thoughtful things if I feel like I've already processed it and I'm not feeling too vulnerable. There were many months where I would share things connected to what I was reading. Other months where I'd share personal curiosities or things that I found interesting. Whatever I would talk to a friend about over coffee.

At this point, the 300+ page Google doc feels like a diary of sorts. I shared last week that I haven't journaled much but what I really meant was that I hadn't journaled privately (which is very different). But I'm thankful for four years of thoughtful considerations and a document filled with my preferences/interests.

The constant has been the fact that I don't accept sponsorships and I don't share affiliate links so I do not make any money from writing this. I've made $485 from tips but I've spent $3,792 writing this email (the software that I use costs $79/mo).

I've mentioned this a few times but I plan to be rolling out some fun new things related to this newsletter in 2024. Mostly for myself because I like to mix things up. Next week will be my last email of 2023! Thank you for being here. xx

Of The Week:

Gifts For Kids Or Yourself: Classic toys.

Analog: I like reading the time on a clock like this. I think I’m going to get one for the house.

Buy Old: I will always prefer buying used and pre-owned and this site and this site are new to me!

Weekend Plans: I got to sit in the 3rd row of our supporters’ section last night to watch our MLS team, the Columbus Crew, win the cup!

Quote I Love: "We need to learn to see our physical form as a river. Our body is not a static thing—it changes all the time." - Thich Nhat Hanh

Take Five and Eat Lunch

  1. I’d probably love this cookbook since leftover dinner is usually my lunch.
  2. We just launched our client Mark Bittman’s new site which combines all of his recipes (and more) under one roof!
  3. I eat eggs for lunch a lot of the time so I’m going to try this recipe! (IG link)
  4. I also like eating beans and bread for lunch so I will try this one, too. (Also IG link)
  5. I've been using my Souper cubes to save leftovers in the freezer for future lunches!

Talk to you next Sunday,

Allie(pal)

It's great to be in your inboxes after three weeks off. I really enjoyed re-thinking this newsletter and all that it can be. If you've been getting my emails for awhile, I don't think you'll feel like it's that different. And if you're new(er), hey! I wanted something new and fresh to re-engage myself, honestly. I think this evolved format will let me share more of me. And expand more on the things that I link out to! I hope it feels like a friend date where we only have an hour but we try to...

This week marks one year since Desh died. I am typically in the Christmas spirit but this year it took a lot of eye rolling and irritability to even get the tree up. He died right near that tree. But it’s the tree that I have and it gives off great light (it’s pink). I don’t want to take a break or time off for the holidays. I want to keep working and live my regular life. But this Thursday, on the actual anniversary, I’ll break the routine and stroll the path of grief. Before I lost anyone...

Journaling (or writing in a diary) is something I did pretty consistently from grade school until college. Then I stopped for quite a while. I consistently journaled and read every morning during the first year of the pandemic. And then I stopped again. I pay to use Reflect and have often considered journaling again but on my laptop where I can type as fast as my brain moves through thoughts. I write slowly now. Which makes sense because I don’t write a lot by hand. But maybe the slowing of...
